SONY MASTERWORKS RELEASES SOUNDTRACK OF 'THE IRON LADY'

Soundtrack Recording Available December 20, 2011

Sony Masterworks is pleased to announce the release of the soundtrack of The Iron Lady on Tuesday, December 20, 2011.  Award-winning composer Thomas Newman created the original music for the soundtrack recording. The Iron Lady opens in theatres on December 30, 2011.

The Iron Lady tells the compelling story of Margaret Thatcher, a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and intimate portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman.

The film stars Academy Award-winners Meryl Streep as Lady Thatcher and Jim Broadbent as Denis Thatcher. Their young selves are played by Alexandra Roach and Harry Lloyd. The rest of the cast of family and friends, politicians and advisers, is made up of the very best of British acting talent, including: Olivia Colman, Anthony Head, Richard E Grant, Iain Glen, Susan Brown, Nicholas Farrell, Roger Allam and Michael Pennington.

The original soundtrack is the work of Thomas Newman, one of the most respected composers in the movie business, who has scored over fifty feature films. Newman has been nominated for an Academy Award on no less than ten occasions, nine times in the category Best Original Score and once for Best Original Song. He has won a BAFTA, two Grammys and an Emmy, and has also been nominated for a Golden Globe. Born in Los Angeles, Yale-educated Thomas Newman comes from a prominent Hollywood musical dynasty: his father, brother, sister and uncle have all composed for the movies, and the singer-songwriter Randy Newman is his cousin.

His first major work in movies was in 1984 for Reckless. In 1999 Newman composed the score to Sam Mendes’ first feature film, American Beauty, and has written the music for all but one of Mendes’ later films, as well as Erin Brockovich and The Good German for director Steven Soderbergh, and such hits as Finding Nemo and The Horse Whisperer. Newman has also composed for TV, including the theme music for Six Feet Under, which won him Grammys for Best Instrumental Composition and Best Instrumental Arrangement, and has been commissioned to write orchestral concert music, for example for the Cleveland Bicentennial in 1996 and for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

The film was written by award-winning writer Abi Morgan (The Hour, Shame, Sex Traffic, Brick Lane), directed by Phyllida Lloyd CBE (Mamma Mia) and produced by Damian Jones (The History Boys, Adulthood). It is executive produced by Francois Ivernel and Cameron McCracken for Pathé, by Tessa Ross for Film4 and by Adam Kulick for Goldcrest.

SONY MASTERWORKS RELEASES JOHN WILLIAMS' 'THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN'

Soundtrack Recording Available December 13, 2011
Sony Masterworks announces the release of the soundtrack recording of The Adventures of Tintin on Tuesday, December 13, 2011. The original music for the film is created by the renowned American composer John Williams.  The Adventures of Tintin opens nationwide in theaters on December 21, 2011.

From Oscar® winning director Steven Spielberg and Oscar® winning producer Peter Jackson, two of today’s most visionary storytellers, comes a 3D motion picture event:  an epic, globe-hopping quest that spans hidden mysteries, menacing criminals and ancient secrets -- and brings to dazzling life the classic escapades that have enthralled generation after generation with their one-of-a-kind mix of action and humor in The Adventures of Tintin.

Based on the internationally beloved and irrepressible characters created by Hergé, the story follows the unquenchably curious young reporter Tintin (Jamie Bell) and his fiercely loyal dog Snowy as they discover a model ship carrying an explosive secret.

Drawn into a centuries-old mystery, Tintin finds himself in the sightlines of Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine (Daniel Craig), a diabolical villain who believes Tintin has stolen a priceless treasure tied to dastardly pirate named Red Rackham.  But with the help of his dog Snowy, the salty, cantankerous Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) and the bumbling detectives Thompson & Thomson (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost), Tintin will travel half the world, outwitting and outrunning his enemies in a breathless chase to find the final resting place of The Unicorn, a shipwreck that may hold the key to vast fortune . . . and a ancient curse.

CHRISTOPHE BECK SCORES 'THE MUPPETS'

LOS ANGELES Award-winning composer Christophe Beck (The Hangover I & II, Waiting For Superman) scores The Muppets, directed by James Bobin with screenplay by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller. The film follows three Muppet fans: Gary (Jason Segel), Mary (Amy Adams) and Walter, who reunite the Muppets to save their old theater from a greedy oil tycoon (Chris Cooper).

The director’s instructions to Beck were to create an orchestral score with a contemporary feel. Another challenge for the composer was to create a score that would seamlessly unite with over a dozen songs from new songs created by Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords) to classics including “Rainbow Connection” by Paul Williams. In addition to The Muppets, Beck recently scored the Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist, currently in theaters.

In 2000, the cheerleading comedy Bring It On launched Beck's prolific film scoring career. His credits include Under the Tuscan Sun, Red, Burlesque, What Happens in Vegas, Elektra and The Hangover, the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time. Last year’s heartwarming film, Crazy, Stupid, Love demonstrated Christophe Beck’s ability to convey a spectrum of emotion, with his varying tones throughout the film. The same year, he won the Hollywood Music and Media Award for “Best Original Score” for the powerful documentary Waiting for Superman.

The Montreal native graduated from Yale with a degree in Music. Following Yale, Beck moved to L.A. to attend USC’s Film Scoring program. A personal recommendation from the legendary Buddy Baker, led to his first assignment for the TV series, White Fang. Soon thereafter, Christophe Beck was asked to score a new TV series, Buffy, based on the movie Buffy The Vampire Slayer for which he received an Emmy.

Surrounded by a constant assault of beauty, glamour, and desire, he finds himself at a crossroads when his wayward sister Sissy (Carey Mulligan) – comes to crash at his sleek Manhattan apartment.  As Brandon struggles to deal with his life of excess, his constant quest for numbness is an escape from both his present and his past. Shame provides a cinematically stunning snapshot of information-age disillusionment, and the struggle for human connection.

HOWE RECORDS TO RELEASE 'HUGO' SCORE

Music By Academy Award® Winner Howard Shore
Featuring Zaz on the Original Song “Coeur Volant”

(New York, NY) Howe Records is pleased to announce the release of the Hugo – Original Score, available in stores and digitally on November 22, 2011. Hugo marks the sixth collaboration between director Martin Scorsese and composer Howard Shore. Like Scorsese’s film, Shore’s score to Hugo is a love letter both to the French culture in the 1930s and to the groundbreaking early days of cinema.

Hugo tells the story of Hugo Cabret, a boy who lives behind the walls of a Parisian train station. Shore’s music is composed for two ensembles – one nested within the other – to create a sense of layering in the musical palette. Inside a full symphony orchestra resides a smaller ensemble, a sort of nimble French dance band that includes the ondes Martenot, musette, cimbalom, tack piano, gypsy guitar, upright bass, a 1930s trap-kit, and alto saxophone. “I wanted to match the depth of the sound to the depth of the image,” says Shore.

The Hugo score is based around a family of primary musical themes. “The themes are used for clarity of storytelling and they develop over the course of the film,” says the composer. The score’s central theme is a Parisian waltz that develops into the song “Coeur Volant.” Howard Shore invited renowned French singer Zaz to collaborate with Elizabeth Cotnoir and him on the song, which captures the lyrical essence of the world of Hugo.

SONY MUSIC RELEASES JOHN WILLIAMS' SCORE FOR 'WAR HORSE'

Sony Music is delighted to announce the release of the Original Soundtrack to DreamWorks Pictures’ “War Horse,” on November 21st.  The film is based on a young adult novel by the British author Michael Morpurgo, first published in the United Kingdom in 1982.

Director Steven Spielberg’s epic adventure is a tale of loyalty, hope and tenacity set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War. “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets—British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

A legend among living movie composers, John Williams has written some of the best-known scores in film history in a career spanning almost six decades. He has composed some of the most recognizable film scores in the history of motion pictures, including the “Star Wars” saga, “Jaws,” “Superman,” the “Indiana Jones” films, “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Hook,” “Jurassic Park,” “Schindler's List,” “Home Alone” and the first three “Harry Potter” films. He has had a long association with director Steven Spielberg, composing the music for all but two of Spielberg's feature films.
