CHRISTOPHE BECK SCORES 'TOWER HEIST'

Score album available on Varese Sarabande

LOS ANGELES Award- winning composer Christophe Beck creates a score that explores and extracts the hilarity behind Universal Pictures' “Tower Heist”. Directed by Brett Ratner (“Rush Hour” series), the film follows Queens native Josh Kovacs (Ben Stiller) and a group of hardworking employees at the high rise Columbus Circle, who discover they have fallen victim to the Ponzi scheme by the tenant of the penthouse suite. Kovacs bands together with his fellow employees, bringing in an outside sleight of hand to get the job done before the biggest white collar crime slips under the rug. The film opens November 4th; score album available on Varese Sarabande. Selections from the score can be heard at www.christophebeck.com Additionally, Beck recently scored “The Muppets.”

Christophe Beck, known for his ability to tell the story of the film through music, creates the tone for this movie. He stated in an interview, “It is storytelling through music and collaboration with another storyteller … the function of the music might change scene to scene, which happens a lot with comedies. Music is there to let the audience though that it is ok to laugh”. Brett Ratner said in an interview with the LA Times, “I love the tone of it [“Tower Heist”] - that’s what I’m most proud of” and this tone could be attributed to the environment in which Beck has cast these characters in through his score. .

In 2000, the cheerleading comedy "Bring It On" launched Beck's prolific film scoring career. His credits include "Under the Tuscan Sun," "Red," "Burlesque," "Year of the Dog," "What Happens in Vegas," and "The Hangover," the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time. One of the best reviewed films of 2010, “Crazy Stupid Love” was transformed into a heart warming film by Christophe Beck, with his varying tones throughout the film that reflected a spectrum of emotion. The same year, he received the HMMA Award for Best Original Score for the powerful documentary “Waiting for Superman”.

The Montreal native graduated from Yale with a degree in Music before moving to L.A. to attend USC’s prestigious Film scoring program where he studies with notable composers Jerry Goldsmith and Christopher Young. A recommendation from the legendary Buddy Baker, led to his first assignment for the TV series, "White Fang.” Soon thereafter, he was asked to score a new TV series, “Buffy,” based on the movie “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” for which he received the Emmy.

HOWARD SHORE'S 'A DANGEROUS METHOD' SET FOR RELEASE ON NOVEMBER 21, 2011

ORIGINAL MUSIC BY AWARD-WINNING COMPOSER HOWARD SHORE AND LANG LANG’S PERFORMANCE OF WAGNER’S “SIEGFRIED IDYLL”

Sony Music is proud to announce the release of the original soundtrack of A Dangerous Method. Howard Shore, a leading composer for movies, wrote the music for this dark and dramatic tale set in Zurich and Vienna on the eve of the First World War. A major part of the soundtrack is a recording of Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll by one of the most exciting pianists of our time, Lang Lang.

A Dangerous Method is the story of the relationship between two of the great pioneers of modern psychology, Carl Jung (played by Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), and of Jung’s relationship with his brilliant and beautiful young patient Sabina Spielrein, a wonderful role for Keira Knightley. Jung successfully treats Sabina, who with his encouragement becomes a psychiatrist herself, and through correspondence about her case Jung gains the friendship of Freud. When Jung breaks off his love affair with Sabina, she becomes Freud’s patient, and differences on moral and intellectual issues open a gap between the two men.

Director David Cronenberg has chosen Howard Shore to write the score for all but one of his films in the last 30 years. Shore has composed music for more than 80 films in all, also working with directors such as Martin Scorsese and Jonathan Demme, with whom he collaborated on Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia. His outstanding success was the Lord of the Rings trilogy, for which he received three Academy Awards. Furthermore he is the winner of two Golden Globe and four Grammy Awards for his film scores. He has also composed a number of concert works and an opera, The Fly, which premiered in Paris in 2008.

CHRISTOPHER YOUNG SCORES 'THE RUM DIARY'

FILM STARRING JOHNNY DEPP OPENS OCTOBER 28, 2011
Soundtrack album is soon to be released with distribution through Lakeshore Records

(Los Angeles, CA) Award-winning composer Christopher Young has added new riffs to his musical lexicon with his jazz-infused score for “The Rum Diary,” based on the eponymous, early novel by Hunter S. Thompson. Depp also produced the film, which features Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Richard Jenkins and Giovanni Ribisi. Bruce Robinson adapted the novel for the screen and also directed the film.

“The Rum Diary” incorporates a tone typical of Thompson’s work, with characters plagued by restlessness, violence, alcohol and fear of growing old. Originally penned in 1960, the “lost novel” was published in 1999. Young explores an exciting variety of mood and rhythm, reminiscent of the first jazz music for films released in the 60s. The music moves effortlessly from blues, fusion, funk and scat to soft Brazilian samba, threaded throughout with saxophone, organ, guitar, trumpet and harmonica.

A former jazz drummer before he began his scoring career, Young possesses that rare instinct for phrasing that sounds improvisational, a rarity for a recorded score. Christopher Young and the Neon Popsicles will perform music from the soundtrack album October 27th at Catalina Bar & Grill, 6725 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

His collaboration with leading directors such as Norman Jewison, Lasse Hallstrom, Barry Levinson, and Curtis Hanson has afforded Young the opportunity to create acclaimed and commercially successful works. Two years ago, Young received BMI’s highest honor, The Richard Kirk Career Achievement Award. In addition to his busy film-composing schedule, Young is imparting his knowledge to a new generation of film composers. He has taught at USC since the early 90s. Young will be honored for his contributions when he receives a career achievement award from Education Through Music – Los Angeles (ETM-LA) on October 25.

BUYSOUNDTRAX RECORDS RE-VISITS ENNIO MORRICONE’S 'THE THING'

Longtime John Carpenter Collaborator Alan Howarth Re-Creates Music For
The Thing—Music From The Motion Picture

(October 2011) – BuySoundtrax Records is proud to announce the release of The Thing-Music From The Motion Picture a recreation of the Ennio Morricone-penned score as heard on the original out-of-print soundtrack album. Alan Howarth, John Carpenter’s longtime collaborator, provides a faithful restoration of the music as it was originally heard on the out-of-print soundtrack. The Thing-Music From The Motion Picture, featuring extensive liner notes by Randall D. Larson, will be released digitally with a limited edition CD (1500 units) be available from www.buysoundtrax.com on Wednesday, October 5, 2011.

The Thing marks the first time that John Carpenter hired an outside composer to score one of his films.   He chose Ennio Morricone, the legendary Italian composer known for his scores for Westerns to write the music. “We couldn’t speak the same language, but he saw a cut of the film and he got some ideas from that, and then I told him about keeping the score to a minimum in terms of the amount of notes and very few key changes,” said Carpenter in a 2000 interview.

Randall Larson describes:

Morricone actually wrote a great deal of music for The Thing, but only a portion of it was used in the film.  “I gave John much more music than he actually needed, and we then came to an agreement to choose one piece in particular to put in the film,” he said.  Carpenter focused on placing Morricone’s throbbing Thing motif and the sustained string pattern of isolation throughout the film as the primary motives.

“There are two different music styles in Morricone’s score,” Alan Howarth explained.  “The first is the more traditional orchestral material that Morricone did on his first pass. After hearing that score, Carpenter actually played the Escape From New York music for Morricone and asked ‘can you give me anything like this?’ So he went back in the studio without the orchestra and created this synthesizer music. That’s when Morricone came up with this very memorable theme with that electronic pulse. It’s almost like Morricone doing John Carpenter.”

LORNE BALFE’S FALL RELEASES

Composer Lorne Balfe (Ironclad, Megamind, Call of Duty 2: Modern Warfare video game) is proud to announce three new fall releases, Five (premieres October 10 on Lifetime), Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure (available October 11th), and Assassins Creed Revelations (available November 15th).

Five (formerly Project Five), an anthology of five short films exploring the impact of breast cancer on people’s lives directed by Jennifer Aniston, Alicia Keys, Demi Moore, Independent Spirit Award winner Patty Jenkins (The Killing) and Penelope Spheeris (Wayne’s World), on Monday, October 10, at 9PM ET/PT.

Through an interconnected story arc developed by Marta Kauffman that uses humor and drama to focus on the effect breast cancer and its different stages of diagnosis have on relationships and the way women perceive themselves while searching for strength, comfort, medical breakthroughs and, ultimately, a cure, Five highlights the shared experience each short film’s title character – “Charlotte” (Ginnifer Goodwin), “Mia” (Patricia Clarkson), “Lili” (Rosario Dawson), “Cheyanne” (Lyndsy Fonseca) and “Pearl” (Jeanne Tripplehorn) – endures from the moment of diagnosis.

In Assassin’s Creed Revelations, master assassin Ezio Auditore walks in the footsteps of his legendary mentor, Altaïr, on a journey of discovery and revelation. It is a perilous path – one that will take Ezio to Constantinople, the heart of the Ottoman Empire, where a growing army of Templars threatens to destabilize the region.  Assassin’s Creed Revelations from Ubisoft, features in-game music composed and produced by Jesper Kyd and main theme, cutscenes & multiplayer music composed and produced by Lorne Balfe.

For generations, the Skylanders have used their magical powers and weapons to protect Skylands. But now, an evil tyrant has frozen and banished them to Earth. Only you can put them on the Portal of Power™ and bring them back to life in their world to save Skylands forever.  Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure features music co-composed by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe.

MARK MCKENZIE SCORES 'THE GREATEST MIRACLE'

LOS ANGELES, CA –Mark McKenzie scores the 3D animated faith-based family film The Greatest Miracle (El Gran Milagro). The film is directed by Bruce Morris and produced by Mexico City-based Pablo Barosso and Claudia Nemer. The Greatest Miracle will be released in both Spanish and English beginning in Los Angeles and Chicago on October 14th, then expanding nationwide. Last month, McKenzie’s heartfelt and uplifting score for the film was premiered as a special concert performance in Madrid, Spain as part of World Youth Day and Pope Benedict XVI’s visit.

The Greatest Miracle (El Gran Milagro) tells an inspiring story of love, hope, and redemption as three characters mysteriously are drawn to attend morning mass. The composer incorporated over 100 musicians and performers into the score including an 80 piece orchestra, a choir, a women’s choir, and the acclaimed London boys choir “Libera.” The score album is available now on BSX Records and iTunes.

The lush, passionate score to The Greatest Miracle (El Gran Milagro) is matched to the narrative of gifted Disney Animation storyteller Morris (Finding Nemo, The Princess and the Frog and Pocahontas). McKenzie’s moving and dramatic composition meshes perfectly with the film’s themes to create a powerful score.

McKenzie is one of a small number composers working in Hollywood who both composes and orchestrates each note of his movie scores. The talented composer/orchestrator has collaborated with virtually every major film composer over the past 20 years. The legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith chose McKenzie to orchestrate and provide additional music on his last seven films before his death. John Barry, Danny Elfman, Bruce Broughton, Alan Silvestri, Marc Shaiman, John Williams, and James Newton Howard all have enlisted McKenzie’s orchestral talent on many scores that have subsequently received Oscars. Although McKenzie has primarily scored independent projects, the composer has garnered a reputation for the thematic richness, beauty, and warmth of his scores.

McKenzie’s extensive list of film orchestration credits includes the films Spider-Man, Nightmare Before Christmas, Good Will Hunting and the Academy Award- winning Dances With Wolves. He also has composed and orchestrated Francis Ford Coppola's My Family / Mi Familia, The Ultimate Gift, and the award-winning Hallmark Hall of Fame television series.

LAKESHORE TO RELEASE 'THE SKIN I LIVE IN' ORIGINAL SCORE

Original Music Composed by Alberto Iglesias

(Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release The Skin I Live In -- Original Score Album available digitally on October 18th and in stores on November 29, 2011. The score was composed by Alberto Iglesias (The Kite Runner, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

“The composer Alberto Iglesias,” said Pedro Almodóvar, is “the only artist I know without an ego, tireless, versatile, patient, capable of looking in one direction and then looking in the opposite direction, always subject to the dictates of the story.” “I had to go to pure emotion in order to play in the same scale that the film does,” said Iglesias.  “It has been a privilege to make this journey that brings you to the exact core of the music.” Spain’s most acclaimed composer, Alberto Iglesias, has solid classical training that includes piano, guitar, composition and counterpoint, as well as electronic music studies. Iglesias was nominated for two Academy Awards, for The Constant Gardener and The Kite Runner.

A composer for the concert hall (orchestra, ensemble and string quartet), Alberto Iglesias’ work in ballet also includes original scores for dancer/choreographer Nacho Duato and his National Dance Company. He has composed scores for such avant-garde Spanish directors as Pedro Almodóvar (The Flower of My Secret, Live Flesh, All About my Mother, Talk to Her, Bad Education, Volver and Broken Embraces), Julio Médem (Vacas, La ardilla roja, Tierra, Los amantes del Círculo Polar, Sex and Lucia), Iciar Bollain (Take my eyes, También La Lluvia), Bigas Luna (La camarera del Titanic) and Carlos Saura (Dispara). Mr. Iglesias also composed scores for the films Comandante, The Dancer Upstairs, Che, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Ever since his wife was burned in a car crash, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, has been interested in creating a new skin with which he could have saved her. After twelve years, he manages to cultivate a skin that is a real shield against every assault. In addition to years of study and experimentation, Robert needed three more things: no scruples, an accomplice and a human guinea pig. Scruples were never a problem. Marilia, the woman who looked after him from the day he was born, is his most faithful accomplice. And as for the human guinea pig.

Sony Classics presents The Skin I Live In in theaters on October 14, 2011. The Skin I Live In – Original Motion Picture Score on Lakeshore Records will be released digitally on October 18th and in stores on November 29, 2011.
